Charles Reade, author of the acclaimed 1861 best seller The Cloister and the Hearth, is far from the only historical novelist whose reputation with critics and readers is far below that accorded by his peers. In my latest novel, Forging the Weapon, about the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) in 1914, I provided details of some the chaos and confusion the soldiers had to endure while they were training at the Valcartier and Salisbury Plain camps. The murdered Sigeferth and Morcar belonged to a northern family so powerful that Aethelred’s son Edmund Ironside’s marriage to Sigeferth’s widow gained him enough power to become the accepted king of the Five Boroughs. [6] It was people like these whom Aethelred, in total contrast to Edgar, managed to alienate by his attempts to impose English law on them.

If one is going to write historical fiction, one  must do the necessary research. Story line starts in the 1850s and lasts till 1865. 8 Principal leads to follow for the movie. There are good anecdotes of many literary characters in this amusing miscellany. They too made advantageous marriages, and acquired large land holdings (at one point rumoured to hold 13 counties).
