Because of successful missionary work, Christianity (both Catholic and Protestant especially) is prevalent throughout Oceania. Ethnic Indians in Fiji still practice Hinduism. Following World War Two, the Jewish population of Australia rose dramatically. Traditional beliefs remain strong on many Pacific islands, particularly in more remote locations. Local rituals in some areas have been transformed into marketable commodities for tourists to view upon payment. Aboriginal art, music and dance have serious devotional components but are also extremely trendy for consumers who enjoy T-shirts bearing religious icons and CDs featuring native instruments. Similarly, Maori ceremonies such as a traditional war dance are now performed during sporting events while Maori carvings are highly sought home decorations Locally produced movies and television shows both reinforce and break stereotypes of Australians and other residents of Oceania. Cultures vary considerably among and within islands. Some groups, like the native Samoans, are unhappy as their daughters embrace Western norms of beauty, such as unnatural thinness, while others fight to throw off Western misconceptions about sexual promiscuity or other behaviors. Contemporary cultures on the Pacific islands reflect the tensions between the maintenance and revival of traditional cultures, their selective construction for the tourist industry, and the widespread penetration of global culture, especially formal education, television and processed foods. Current ethnic conflict in Fiji directly results from British colonial policies. From 1879 to 1920, Britain encouraged the economic migration of workers from India to Fiji. By 1970, when Fiji became independent from Britain, nearly half its population was ethnic Indian. While ethnic discrimination is officially illegal, ethnic Indians and native Fijians are almost completely segregated from each other. Each group maintains its own cultural distinction, intermarriage is almost nonexistent and each interacts with the other only on an as-needed basis. Ethnic Indian Fijians tend to be wealthier, better educated and to have greater economic and political authority. Conflict over political supremacy has plagued Fiji for decades. In 1987, a military coup overthrew the ethnic Indian dominated government. In 1999, Fijians elected their 1st ethnic Indian prime minister. Within a year, an attempted coup by native Fijian nationalists held hostage the prime minister, members of parliaments and other high-ranking government officials. Only the involvement of Australia and other more powerful countries led to the release of the hostages and the imprisonment of the coup leader, George Speight. Financial backing for Speight was traced to American financiers who were interested in obtaining rights to mahogany plantations that were coming to maturity. Prime Minister Chaudhury, however, was obtaining funds from British corporations that were also interested in the maturing mahogany trees. Some analysts have also suggested that Speights coup was timed to prevent Chaudhury from implementing an economic reform campaign that might have uncovered millions of unpaid tax dollars. In September 2001, Chaudhury was turned out of office in favor of a native Fijian, Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase. While the fate of the mahogany trees is still unclear, Fiji has yet to rebound from an enormous drop in crucial tourist revenue.
