This is precisely the modern notion of a Riemannian metric, and manifolds equipped with such a metric are known as Riemannian manifolds. They were all a waste of money (not completely) but Nakahara's book has pretty much all the math i've ever needed in a much easier format. In the latter part of the twentieth century, researchers have tried to extend the relationship between algebra and geometry to arbitrary noncommutative rings. Often, the reasoning used in geometry itself is of geometric nature, i.e. one reasons with properties of figures (as say is done in classical Euclidean geometry ).
